Expert: China should pay attention to the health of its residents

www.chinanews.cn 2007-03-27 09:21:25

Chinanews, Haikou, March 27 – “The health of the people should be the
ultimate goal of a country’s economic development; besides, competent
personnel should be the most important resources in the modern world.
Thus China must pay attention to the health conditions of its residents,
which is a necessary strategy to be a world power,” said Li Lin, vice
director of China Center for Economic Research of Peking University.
Li also works as a consultant for the Ministry of Health and World Bank.
During the China Medicine Forum 2007 in Haikou, she called for a fair
public medicare system that would cover all the Chinese people.
“China once offered medicare to 22% of the world’s population with only
less than 1% of the world’s total medical funds, when the life expectancy
and the infant mortality rate in China were 68 and 41 thousandths
respectively,” said Li.
However, the situations of intellectuals are even more serious. According
to a survey by Shanghai Municipal Academy of Social Sciences in the
beginning of 2007, the life expectancy of intellectuals in Beijing was
only 53, when the figure of 10 years ago was 59, and the life expectancy
of Beijingers in 1964 was 68.
“China’s rapid economic development has not resulted in a good medicare
system. It is sad to see that so many intellectuals died in their prime,”
concluded Li.
